Letter to our Patients: Covid-19 Information

April 8, 2020

To our patients,

First, let us say that we are very grateful for all of you that you entrust the health of your eyes to Athens Eye Doctors and Surgeons.  It is a privilege to have so many wonderful patients, and we truly love taking care of you.  Our passion for our job has made the past few weeks especially difficult, as we have responded to the COVID-19 pandemic.

On March 18 the American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO) recommended that we see only urgent clinic patients and cease all elective surgery in an effort to preserve personal protective equipment (PPE) to respond to a potential COVID-19 outbreak.  This was congruent with guidelines from the Center for Medicare Services and the Center for Disease Control (CDC).  We subsequently altered our clinic and surgery schedules to align with these guidelines.  Currently, in our clinics we are only seeing urgent and emergent patients, while practicing safe social distancing.  Our Ambulatory Surgery Center is largely shut down except for a few time sensitive procedures.

However, we want you to know that we are still here to serve you.  We have a physician in the clinic nearly every day, and there is always a physician on call.  If you have an urgent eye care need or an emergency, please call our office number, (706) 549-9993, and we will take care of you.

Additionally, we have implemented telemedicine services, and we are able to handle many on-call issues simply over a video or phone call.  This is much easier than you think and can allow you to avoid unnecessary risk.  When you call please be sure to leave us a mobile phone number if you have one to facilitate telemedicine visits.

Though our optical shop is closed, if you are in need of contact lenses, let us know, as we are still processing contact lens orders.

Please be assured we are keeping your safety in mind.  We are following the guidelines from the AAO and CDC and will continue when our clinic returns to full operation.

To enhance your safety when visiting our office all patients and staff are being screened for COVID-19 risk factors and symptoms and having their temperature checked when entering the building.

We ask that all patients bring a mask if you have one.  All who enter our facility staff, patients and guests are required to wear a face mask.

If you do not have a mask we will provide a handmade mask to you.  If you are able, we will gladly accept a small donation (2$-5$) for each mask.

The number of patients in our facility at any given time is limited to allow for social distancing.  The front desk check in area, waiting room and each exam room is completely sanitized between patients.

Again, the safety of our patients, staff, and community are of paramount importance to us.  Together we will get through this trying season.  We eagerly anticipate the day that we can safely return to full operation, though we know it may look different for quite some time.  In the meantime, do not hesitate to contact us if we can help you.  Our physicians and staff are always available.

Warmest regards,

The Physicians and Staff at Athens Eye Doctors and Surgeons
